Over the holiday season a miracle happened for one of our dearest employees. They have been on dialysis for kidney failure for a better part of a year. Last week, they were given a second chance at life with the donation of a healthy kidney. It is a true blessing. There is not a more deserving person to receive this gift.
In the coming months, we will miss him. We will miss his dedication to our team, to our customers and he is truly part of our family. We will welcome him back if he chooses to return.
In honor of his amazing donor, we want to dedicate this blog to them, and share ways that others can give the gift of life through amazing organizations. The gift of life is a miracle. You can be the miracle that saves the life of someone else.
The National Kidney Foundation:
Today, more than 100,000 people in the USA are on a waiting list for a life saving kidney donation. Unfortunately, only about 17,000 receive a donated kidney each year. When you do the math, that leaves almost 90 percent of those in need of a kidney waiting.
With the advancement of science, you do not need to be a genetic relative to be a living donor. You don’t even need to have the same blood type. Becoming a living donor means that if you have two healthy kidneys you can donate one to improve or even save the life of someone else.
The advantages of a living donation are substantial, and you can learn more about it on the kidney.org website.
You don’t have to give your kidney to support those in need. There are so many misconceptions about living donors. You can become an advocate for education in your community by getting involved HERE.
Be The Match:
Did you know that every three minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer like leukemia? The miracle is that a cure does exist for blood cancer. In fact, it is a common misconception that donating your bone marrow or even plasma can save the life of someone you have never met. Today, 85% of donations do not involve any surgery at all. If you have ever donated blood or given plasma, you can be a donor. They will send you a kit in the mail, it takes about a minute to complete the test and send it back to join the national donor registry. Learn more about joining the registry HERE.
If you are not comfortable being a donor, you can also become an advocate to spread the word about saving the life of another person through joining the National Marrow Donor Program. Learn more about advocacy HERE.
More About NMDP:
The National Marrow Donor Program has been managing the most diverse marrow registries in the world for the last 35 years. They work every single day to save lives for those with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.
“At NMDPSM, we believe each of us holds the key to curing blood cancers and disorders. As a global nonprofit leader in cell therapy, NMDP creates essential connections between researchers and supporters to inspire action and accelerate innovation to find life-saving cures. With the help of blood stem cell donors from the world’s most diverse registry and our extensive network of transplant partners, physicians and caregivers, we’re expanding access to treatment so that every patient can receive their life-saving cell therapy. NMDP. Find cures. Save lives.”
Become an Organ Donor:

The number of patients waiting for a life saving organ donation changes daily, but as of September of 2023 the number of people waiting for a donation was over 100,000. Every 10 minutes a new patient is added to the list. When you sign up to be an organ donor, you can help so many people with the gift of life. Just because you register does not mean that you will be able to donate. In fact, only 3 in every 1,000 people pass in a way that allows for their organs to use in a lifesaving transplant. You can learn more HERE.
Again, you do not need to be an organ donor yourself to advocate for organ donations. You can make a big difference by helping spread the word about organ donation, and you can even volunteer locally in your community. Learn more on the website organdonor.gov
There is also a misconception that the only time you can sign up to be an organ donor is when you renew your drivers license. You don’t have to wait. You can sign up online HERE.
