Keeping a Golden septic system healthy

A septic tank in Golden only needs a few things from you. Pump it on a schedule, keep heavy vehicles off the drain field, and send only water and waste down the drains. Grease, wipes and harsh chemicals shorten the life of the tank and the field. A quick yearly look at the lids and the ground above the field catches small problems early.

Signs your system needs attention

Septic problems tend to show up gradually. Listen for gurgling pipes, watch for slow drains in more than one fixture, and check the yard for standing water or a sewer smell after heavy water use. If an alarm sounds on a pump or aerobic system, cut back on water and call for service rather than silencing it and waiting.

Picking a septic company that knows Golden

Septic work around Golden depends on local soil, county rules and the system types common in the area. Ask how often the company works in Jefferson County and whether they handle your type of system. A good company explains what it found, what it recommends and why, before any work begins.

Setbacks and inspections near Golden

Septic rules around Golden say how far a tank and drain field must sit from wells, streams, foundations and property lines. New systems and replacements are inspected before they are covered. If you plan an addition, a pool or a new driveway, check where the system sits first so the work does not damage it.

Local conditions in Golden

Among the mapped soils within about two miles of central Golden, the USDA soil survey rates 78% as very limited for septic absorption fields, 14% as somewhat limited and 8% as not limited. The most common drainage class is well drained. Soils like these often call for careful system design, such as a larger drain field, a mound or another engineered system, and a site evaluation before any new installation or replacement.

Golden averages about 17 inches of precipitation a year, and July is usually the wettest month. Average temperatures stay below freezing for about 3 months a year, with December averaging 28°F, so tank lids and shallow lines benefit from a layer of snow or mulch rather than being cleared bare.

Who handles septic permits for Golden?
Septic permits and inspection rules are usually set at the county or state level. Check with the Jefferson County health department or permitting office, or ask the septic company to pull permits for you.
What are signs of septic trouble?
Slow drains in several fixtures, gurgling pipes, sewage odors, wet or unusually green grass over the drain field, and backups in the lowest drains are the common warning signs.
